Microsoft not suing open source developers

In a press event today Microsoft announced that they will make new efforts to work with other companies and developers to ensure interoperability.

Their press release says, “Microsoft will indicate on its Web site which protocols are covered by Microsoft patents and will license all of these patents on reasonable and non-discriminatory terms, at low royalty rates. To assist those interested in considering a patent license, Microsoft will make available a list of specific Microsoft patents and patent applications that cover each protocol.”

It continues, “Microsoft is providing a covenant not to sue open source developers for development or non-commercial distribution of implementations of these protocols. These developers will be able to use the documentation for free to develop products.”

How big of them. They first say that open source developers are using Microsoft technology without - as far as I know - really provide any evidence and certainly not try their claim in court, and then they say “we’ve now decided that we’re not going to sue you guys”.

Sucking good

Back in Emirates

We’re now back in the Emirates after almost two weeks in the US. Our visit was supposed to be for only one week but it had to be extended for various reasons. This meant that I didn’t have time to do all the things I was supposed to do before work started again today so I’m behind on so many things. But I’ll dig right into it and get it done ;-)
It’s hard to get back into the right time zone though. We landed at 2am Friday morning, and after getting home and stuff we didn’t really go to sleep until around 4am. Then we woke up around 2pm Friday, and even last night it was really hard going to sleep at the normal time. I guess it will take some time to adjust back.

ADWC instated new programs

ADWC instated new programs:

A source at the Abu Dhabi Women’s College (ADWC) announced that the college has instated an additional three programs during the second semester of the current year, Khaleej Times reported.

He further pointed out that ADWC’s Applied Communications Department recently introduced a Diploma in Graphic Design/Interior Design to prepare students for entry-level positions in the interior design field.

ADWC students will sit for courses in drawing, color theory, design principles and digital software applications and upon graduation and will be qualified to create exhibition and promotional displays.

The second program being introduced is the Diploma in Health Office Technology, by the Health Sciences Department and will give graduates knowledge and skills to support administrative and management duties in the field of healthcare.

ADWC will further start offering a Software Engineering Concentration in its Higher Diploma in Information Technology (IT), which aims to answer the demand for engineers in the UAE.

Double dipping is disgusting

Apparently double dipping is gross, disgusting really, so watch out for it at the next party:

Last year the food microbiologist’s undergraduate students examined the effects of double dipping using volunteers, wheat crackers and several sample dips. They found that three to six double dips transferred about 10,000 bacteria from an eater’s mouth to the remaining dip sample.

Third cable cut

Apparently a third cable supplying the Middle East and Asia with internet has been cut. Marvelous! As if two weren’t enough.
