Dating in Sweden

The Local has a funny piece on dating in Sweden:

One strategy for finding love in Sweden is to embrace all available technologies. Entire relationships are conducted by SMS. Just like you can file your income taxes and get a loan with your mobile phone, you can now practically get married and divorced by SMS.

The Internet is another effective way to connect with the Swede of your dreams. Online dating is perfectly socially acceptable, but be beware of anyone who calls himself “SwedishCowboy4U” and offers to show you his chaps. And remember that the advanced search allows you to filter out anyone who is stupid enough to describe himself as a balding middle-aged man with two ex-wives, six children and 11 toes.

Two sickos

Well yesterday Crystal was babysitting some friend’s kids and had to step in a little puddle of water, fell badly and now has two fractures in her right knee. I had to leave work early and couldn’t get a taxi for about 20 minutes so I gave up and just walked (took me about 90 minutes) through Abu Dhabi. She’s doing okay though and can actually get around a bit with a knee-brace and crutches.

Last week at the Emirates Palace during the Middle East International Film Festival, a lot of people there were sick, with coughs and runny noses. Of course I got it and it was all I could do to get through Thursday’s press conference. Then Saturday I was doing better… that was until this morning when I felt like crap again. I got to school, did my first class, but that was it. So I left early, and I’m now trying to doctor the cold so I can go back to work. I doubt that will be tomorrow though, perhaps Thursday.

Sweden gears up for royal wedding

The Local:

News has emerged that Sweden’s foreign ministry has requested extra funds for a “wedding in the Royal Court” next year. But the royal family is remaining tight-lipped about future plans for Crown Princess Victoria, 30, and boyfriend Daniel Westling, 34.

Newspaper Expressen reported on Friday morning that it had read a foreign ministry memo on the subject of “preparations for a wedding at the Royal Court”. The amount of additional cash needed for “overtime, press logistics, computer support, extra staff etc.” was however “impossible to quantify at the present moment”.

Charleston, SC’s free Wi-Fi network goes dark

From Muni Wireless:

In another example of a private partner under-estimating the scope of muni Wi-Fi projects, the city of Charleston, SC, is being forced to decommission the free wireless hotspot that is already operating there. Whether the city will have to abandon the network remains to be seen.

Charleston had planed to deploy a wireless mesh across the city. Two years after it announced the plan, it is terminating its contract with the company that pledged to build and pay for it in exchange for the right to sell upgrades to a faster subscription service.

Sound familiar? This is the same business model that EarthLink was pursuing and that proved unworkable for that company. Widespread now says it underestimated how much hardware would be required to blanket the city with a signal.

Charleston is looking for a provider to pick-up where Widespread left off. The city’s economic developer told a local paper, The Post and Courier, that Charleston’s objectives have not changed.
